I suppose though we can argue quite convincingly (I think--well I would!) that we're able to be infinitely more considered in our approach. And there does seem to be some genuine ill will towards the humanities from The Australian.

I don't agree with EP that the debate on the list wasn't robust, in the sense that ideas were shared and there was a valuable discussion about how to respond most effectively. As to the suggestion to foster a broader critical literacy, it is a good idea; one that I think that Danny Butt made in his description of teaching and policy, but perhaps it needed to be made in the Oz too.Kirstyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14035268080440921379noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15851934.post-1154772241749873662006-08-05T20:04:00.000+10:002006-08-05T20:04:00.000+10:00well, I am just bored by their disingenuous stokin...well, I am just bored by their disingenuous stoking of ‘debates’, which merely serve their ongoing campaign to undermine the nation’s humanities researchers and educators in order to shore up their own position as the arbiter of all things cultural. Snore.

Got it in one, mademoiselle. I thought this while reading the list emails, and was a little bit surprised nobody said it. I guess it was a direct attack on CS and so it probably hurt some of the listmembers whereas it jst annoyed me momentarily -- but still, it's worth recognising that the Aus does this all the time, and always in this very superficial way.

I thought Elspeth Probyn's response was quite good, overall - tactically it struck the right note - though I have read Amamda Anderson's book and it is not a dense or obscurantist work and I don't think it's quite fair to use it as the straw-theorist text.
