98 Reasons For Blogging: 10

10. As a mother and a blogger... No, this is not another overly confessional, revealing post (I have not had a baby since we last spoke). You've had enough of those from me lately. I just thought if I began this post with 'As a mother and a blogger...' you would be instantly enthralled by whatever I had to say; my moral authority would be unquestionable in a way that it wouldn't be if I began, 'As an aunt and a blogger...' or 'As a daughter and a blogger...', even 'As a sister and a blogger'. What if I said 'As a spinster and a blogger...'? , 'As a woman and a blogger...?', or 'As a single mother and a blogger...'? Well, I couldn't say that last one, but I think it would probably hold even less authority than the spinster one, since we as a society don't like our mothers to err by doing it by themselves, for what ever reason.

Now, I've lead you this far, convinced you of my moral authority, I have to disappoint you. I have nothing to say as either a woman, a spinster, an aunt, a daughter, or a blogger. Here's a comic for stopping by:

I've been wondering how you've been going with your 'as a mother' moral authority experiment. Which I thought was a very interesting one.

Well, I was orginally inspired by an NRMA advertisement. Not sure if it's an all states one. This woman says "As an accountant and a mother..." which just cracked me up; clearly that combination makes her especially authoritative on matters of how to save on your car insurance. (I'm not sure what to make of the fact that she buys wine with the savings she's made. She says it helps her cope with her children, which is even funnier). I've also been motivated by those brandpower (?) ads where everyone is an expert on various types of products, not necessarily connected to parenting, on account of their status as a mother. No-one seems to say 'as a father...', but perhaps a man's moral authority is a given.

Suffice to say, I still have no moral authority. And no-one's trying to sell anything to me--perhaps I should be grateful?--it's as though as a single woman, on a relatively low income, I'm not trying to save money as I go about my life. It's apparently all just one big spendthrift party for my type.

I should stop raving now. I don't know what I'm talking about at all. I guess I'm just inexplicably/stupidly miffed that none of these ads seek to address me.

Actually, before I sign off, it's just occurred to me that if you're not a mother (in a very narrow sense) or a sexually available woman (also in a very narrow sense) then it's as though you don't exist.

Oh dear, I think I've been hanging out too much which people going through mid-life crises.
